WHERE TO GET A WEBSITE:If you want a domain, you have to purchase the domain name and hosting from a hosting site. For a subdomain, you will usually just have to apply for one. If you don't know where to purchase a domain, just google it and they'll be a lot of different sites that you can buy domains from. Some of these sites are Rewindhost, Godaddy, Hostmonster, Parade Hosting, etc. Make sure you're 100% positive that you want a website, because it costs money. You need to be familiar with FTP, CSS, and HTML. Having an editing program like Photoshop is something you might need too. If you're just getting started, a subdomain would be the best option if you're new at this.
WHAT TO NAME MY SITE:
First, you have to make sure that the name you want is available. If it is, then make sure the name is eye catching, easy to type and remember, what you want (cause you can't change it), and appropriate. Your site name should be based on your content and what you have to offer. It could also represent who you are as a person, like your personality. Don't make your site name too long though; no one wants to type in a long site url.
YOUR CONTENT/ STUFF:
You need to be original and not redistribute/copy/jock anything from another site. Make sure you have some talent towards what you are making. Don't make so many things and not have quality. Take your time and work hard on your content. Make sure you update your content often or you'll lose your visitors. Updating will bring more viewers and costumers to your website.
YOUR DOMAIN LAYOUT:
To make your own domain layout, you need a photo-editing program such as Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro. Be creative with your layout, but don't make it too small. Use colors that will attract viewers, but nothing too bright. Make sure everything blends well and matches. Don't use small fonts! Not everyone is going to have perfect eyes. Your site is for the viewers, so use a normal size font like Tahoma, Arial, Georgia, and Verdana. Also, don't use light colored fonts. Your better off with using black. If you can't make your own domain layout for whatever reason, many sites offer premades.
ORGANIZATION IS KEY:
Organize your site. Even though you might know where everything is, your viewers don't! Put your content in visible areas. Being organized can be really easy, yet this is what some sites lack the most.
WEBSITE TRAFFIC:
It takes a lot of time to get a lot of viewers and to make your site well-known. So don't be disapointed if within a couple of weeks, your site hasn't gained much views at all. If you want to see your site statistics, like how many people are online your site and how many people go to your site daily, then google 'Site Tracker' or something along those lines. Try becoming affiliates with other sites and get advertised. It's actually a really good way to get more viewers.
